Tax Tips for Internet Marketers

There are so many different aspects of both online and offline business that have the potential for overwhelming anyone. If you are familiar with french furniture and have been around the world of business on the net, then you should have a solid idea of what we are talking about.

The primary reason for using freelance help is to allow for more time on activities that directly impact revenue. We understand if you are not quite at that point, though, but there is much available that is very low cost or no cost. While outsourcing can work very well, you can encounter some challenges if you do not know what you are doing in the first place. When you take this approach of planning and executing with good information, then that will help you to eliminate the possibility of some mistakes.

One of the worst misconceptions regarding working in Internet Marketing is that it is a tax free industry. Individuals go into it convinced that as the money they earn comes to them mainly through online sources like PayPal that they do not have to pay taxes on the things that they've earned. This is incorrect! More importantly, failing to pay taxes on this income could easily get you into a lot of trouble! Do not panic, though: it's not tough to do taxes when you are a web marketer. Here are some ideas to help you out.

1. Set up a meeting with the local Small Business Association. Every single community has some form of small business "helper" organization (often run through a community college) that's got trained professionals available to help you both getting your business starting and making sure that all of your T's are crossed and your I's are dotted. What's particularly nice is that this resource is just about always without charge.

2. Record each little thing. Say it again: keep an eye on each and every last detail. Excel makes this simple enough. All you need is one spreadsheet that will monitor all of the money you earn (down to the penny) and another that will keep track of all of the money you expend (yet again, down to the penny). Don't forget to keep every single receipt and invoice for the money you shell out.

3. If you have more than enough funding, work with a professional accountant. This will likely allow you a bit of freedom in the tracking of all of your taxes and small business numbers. You tell your accountant what you've generated and expended (you should have documentation for proof) and they do the rest.

4. Put money towards the taxes that you might owe at the end of the year. A fundamental rule of thumb here is to pay in 30% of each sale. This can be accomplished through quarterly Estimated Tax Payments or even monthly with the IRS. The IRS currently has the ability to receive estimated tax payments any time you think or want to make them. This way you will not have an eye popping number that you owe at the end of the year (which will be specifically stressful if you haven't saved up for it). Better yet: if you have overpaid in your estimated tax payments, you will get a refund -- just like you would if you were working for an employer! Be sure to speak with someone at the IRS to make sure you get set up the right way.

5. Learn which write-offs you're permitted to take. If you want to manage your own business from home, many things including the payments you make for your utilities become tax deductible just like the money you'll spend on supplies or business equipment. Your accountant or an agent from the IRS can help you work out which deductions you can claim at tax season.

It isn't all that hard to become intimidated by the idea of paying taxes when you are an online marketer. The good thing is that there are quite a few resources that can help you ensure that you don't get in trouble with the IRS and that you could keep a healthy portion of the earnings that you make.
